Cooking with a Costa Rican Family

Cooking with a Costa Rican family was a definite highlight of our recent trip to Costa Rica. It was an experience that went far beyond a meal and became a memory we’ll treasure forever.

Our evening began in the most authentic way possible: in our host family’s garden. As we wandered through the lush greenery, hand-picking fresh herbs and crisp lettuce for dinner, a light drizzle began to fall; just enough to remind us we were deep in the rainforest. No worries at all though! Umbrellas were quickly handed out, and we continued our garden tour in the rain. That moment made the experience feel even more authentic and magical, embracing the rhythm of daily life in Costa Rica

As if the setting couldn’t get more memorable, we spotted the resident sloth lounging peacefully in the trees above us. This was a moment that felt straight out of a nature documentary. To top it off- she is most likely “with sloth!” From the garden, we moved into their outdoor kitchen- an open-air space the family uses every single day. This wasn’t a restaurant or a staged cooking class; it was their real kitchen, where meals are shared, stories are told, and everyday life unfolds. Cooking alongside them in this space made the experience feel incredibly personal and meaningful. With fresh ingredients and plenty of laughter, we rolled up our sleeves, mixed the freshest mojitos I’ve ever tasted, and cooked an absolutely incredible meal together. Every dish felt like a celebration of Costa Rican culture – simple, fresh, and full of heart.

As the sun began to set, the experience continued with a twilight walk through the property. We spotted frogs and toads tucked among the foliage and were amazed by the sleeping birds perched quietly in the trees. They were so peaceful and still that nothing could have woken them – a highlight of the night and a beautiful reminder of how in tune nature is here.

What made the evening even more special was the people we shared it with. We were joined by two lovely ladies from Switzerland and a wonderful family from Chicago, all brought together by curiosity, good food, and a shared love for travel. Our Costa Rican hosts were beyond kind and welcoming, making us feel like part of their family from the moment we arrived.

It was a magical night- rich in culture, connection, and unforgettable moments. Experiences like this are what travel is truly about, and this one will stay with us forever.
