Travel Truth: Sometimes the Wrong Turns Lead to the Best Stories

In travel, there will always be missed turns, canceled plans, and moments that feel like total disasters. But in my experience, those “unplanned adventures” are the ones you remember forever.

Years ago, my husband and I were hiking in New Zealand. What we thought would be an easy two-hour loop somehow turned into a five-hour trek. We were exhausted, out of water, and-let’s be honest-bickering by the time we made it back to the car.

Determined to reset, we found a nearby restaurant, walked in sweaty and dusty in our old Southern Miss T-shirts, and asked for a table.

Cue the stares.

The hostess politely asked, “Are you aware this is a tasting menu at a set price?”

We looked at each other, shrugged, and said, “Of course!” (We absolutely didnot know.) And since we were already committed, we added the wine pairing, too.

They tucked us into a back room-clearly the “hide the underdressed tourists” section-and what followed was one of the best meals of our lives.

But it gets better…

At one point, we thought we were finished and tried to leave-only to have our waiter chase us down to ask if we’d like to continue the remaining courses. We awkwardly pretended we were just “stepping out for some air”… but considering we had already stopped by the front and paid our bill, no one was fooled.

Laughing at ourselves, we walked back through the dining room, avoiding eye contact with patrons who were clearly trying to hide their amusement. By then, we knew we had become part of the entertainment.

We sat back down. Another glass of wine-a toast to unexpected adventures and a good dose of humility-and we continued the meal, savoring every bite of those final courses. It remains one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had.

Later, when we told our New Zealand host, she laughed hysterically.

As it turns out, we had wandered into one of the most coveted restaurants in the country-the kind people wait months to experience. The kind visited by royalty.

And there we were: two lost, sweaty tourists in college football shirts, stumbling into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Moral of the story:

Not every travel moment goes as planned… but sometimes, the detours are where the magic happens.

So take the wrong turn. Say yes anyway. And don’t worry if you’re underdressed-you might just end up somewhere unforgettable.
